Water delivery for wetlands

Friday 16 August, 2024
Wetlands, fish, platypus and turtles will benefit from a delivery of water for the environment.

Water will be released from Lake Eildon into the Goulburn River from 17 August.

Referred to as a late winter fresh, the water will flow into low lying wetlands between Lake Eildon and Seymour, connecting the wetlands with the Goulburn River. This will improve water quality and provide more feeding areas for platypus and turtles.

These wetlands also provide important habitat for small native fish and waterbugs.

The peak flow rate, expected around 22 August at Eildon, will be 5,500 ML/day. River levels will drop to base flows of 1,000ML/day before the opening of trout season on Saturday 7 September.

This water delivery will continue to flow downstream along the whole length of the Goulburn River and eventually reach the Murray River.

Water for the environment is water that’s allocated and managed to improve the health of waterways, wetlands and floodplains.

The Mid Goulburn wetland near Homewood will benefit from a delivery of water for the environment.

Feeding areas for platypus will increase as a result of the water delivery.
