Water for the environment use across the catchment

In the Goulburn Broken Catchment, environmental water is delivered to the following waterways and wetlands:

Goulburn River

The Goulburn River flows for 570km from the Great Dividing Range upstream of Woods Point to the Murray River east of Echuca.

Lower Broken Creek and Nine Mile Creek

This region includes Broken Creek downstream of the Boosey Creek confluence, and Nine Mile Creek from Katamatite to the Murray River at Barmah Forest, totaling 184km of waterways.

Broken River

The Broken River is a tributary of the Goulburn River, starting south of Benalla and flowing north-west for 190km until it joins the Goulburn River near Shepparton.

Upper Broken Creek

The upper Broken Creek diverges from the Broken River downstream of Benalla at Caseys Weir and flows for 65km north to the Boosey Creek confluence near Katamatite. From Katamatite the Broken Creek flows west to the Murray River and is considered to part of the lower Broken Creek (see Lower Broken Creek and Nine Mile Creek above).

Barmah Forest

The Barmah-Millewa Forest is the largest river red gum forest in Australia. It covers approximately 66,000 hectares of floodplain between the townships of Tocumwal, Deniliquin and Echuca.

Goulburn Broken Wetlands

More than 2000 natural wetlands, covering approximately 86,000 hectares have been recorded in the Goulburn Broken Catchment. These wetlands include large permanent lakes, floodplain billabongs, small spring soaks, alpine bogs and shallow freshwater depressions.
