Channel bank removal guide

Modernisation of the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District irrigation network (through the Connections Program) opens up opportunities for landholders to carry out works on their properties.

Before landholders start any works that involve decommissioning (removal) of channel banks, they must check the flood risk to their own and to neighboring land. This is best undertaken as part of a Whole Farm Plan, in consultation with a designer and Agriculture Victoria extension staff (where applicable).

To help simplify the planning process the map below provides a “traffic light” system showing how decommissioning channel banks affect flooding.

If a channel is coded as “green” or “amber” the flood risk for the decommissioning of these channels has been assessed as low to medium. A landholder is advised to talk to their local council about an earthworks permit (or an earthworks planning exemption) if they wish to decommission one of these channels.

Channels coded “red” have been assessed as high flood risk (if removed) and must be retained.

Blue coded channels are principal Goulburn-Murray Water distribution channels known as primary irrigation channels.
