Koala Conservation Project

Landholders and landcarers in the project area have a special connection with koalas and have been very excited about the opportunity to restore their habitat and connections. Koalas are an indicator species of landscape health. It is important to raise awareness about the survival issues that koalas face. The project helped to restore koala habitat in the area and create connectivity throughout the landscape for koalas and other wildlife to move safely.‍

Our koala observation database on KoalaMap has been successful and we have had 33 observations uploaded to the database by project participants. This has helped us get a better understanding of koala distribution in the project area and other information such as breeding activity, health issues, and roadkill observations and hotspots.

The project delivered important on-ground works of planting and connecting koala habitat on the properties of participants in our project area. UGLN restored koala habitat in the area and created connectivity throughout the landscape for koalas and other wildlife to move safely, including threatened species such as Brush-tailed Phascogales, Squirrel Gliders, Diamond Firetails and Brown Treecreepers.

UGLN plan to continue working in the original project area with expansion of the project to connect the Goulburn River with the Cathedral Ranges.
