Opportunities for more Landcare involvement

Thursday 29 April, 2004
Landcare and Environmental Groups throughout the Goulburn Broken catchment will have the chance to take part in the development of a Community Landcare Support Strategy over the next few months.

Landcare and Environmental Groups throughout the Goulburn Broken catchment will have the chance to take part in the development of a Community Landcare Support Strategy over the next few months.

Meetings will be held with Landcare groups to develop the strategy, part of Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority’s (CMA) commitment to implement the Victorian Action Plan for Second Generation Landcare.

Landcare Coordinators will run the meetings and seek feedback from group members throughout the catchment so that all opinions are taken into account.

Community opinion will form the backbone of a new Strategy that will be a sub strategy of the Goulburn Broken Regional Catchment Strategy and provide the framework for Landcare support in the Goulburn Broken Catchment.

Information about the consultation process has been provided to Landcare groups throughout the catchment and coordinators will contact them to arrange meetings during the next few weeks.

Bill O’Kane, CMA Chief Executive Officer, said that the strategy will encourage and maintain the strong links already forged with Landcare.

“There are about 105 Landcare groups representing at least 3,500 people within the region — all of whom are integral to the ongoing success of the Landcare movement. They have been instrumental in completing over $2 million of environmental works funded by Second Generation Landcare since it was initiated by the Victorian Government in 2000.’’ Mr O’Kane said.

“We are committed to the role Landcare groups have in natural resource management and the Community Landcare Support Strategy will strengthen this partnership,” he said.

Landholders and community members who would like to take part in this process should approach their local Landcare group. For information about meeting times and venues contact Heather Holder, the Regional Landcare Coordinator on 5761 1540.
