Local environment to benefit from Financial Assistance to Land Owners through the Strathbogie Ranges Wetland Tender

The Strathbogie Ranges Wetland Tender is now open and creates a great opportunity for Landholders to manage these unique and important wetlands in a sustainable way through financial assistance.

The Strathbogie Ranges Wetland Tender is now open and creates a great opportunity for Landholders to manage these unique and important wetlands in a sustainable way through financial assistance.

The wetlands (spring soaks, bogs and peatlands) in the Strathbogie Ranges are a distinctive feature of this area, and deliver a range of ecosystem services, including providing critical habitat for many characteristic plants and animals, improving the quality of water flowing downstream and helping to maintain water flows into streams all year round, from the hills to the plains.

“A Tender process is being used by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (CMA) because it provides a mechanism for landholders to obtain financial support to protect and manage these unique wetlands for the benefit of not only their property but also the health of the general environment, which in turn benefits the whole community” says Goulburn Broken CMA Wetland Tender Project Coordinator Dr Jenny Wilson.

“The unique nature of a Tender process means the landowner decides how much financial support they require to improve the health of the wetlands.  Similar projects have shown that participation results in a sense of real achievement in better land management while helping to protect wildlife.”

Dr Wilson explains “By investing public money in supporting land management actions such as fence installing, off-wetland water points and/or weed control then we can start to see a gain for the public in terms of cleaner water in our rivers and creeks, better habitat for wildlife (particularly in times of drought),  flood protection and erosion control, and improved aesthetics.
