With funding the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (GB CMA) received through Caring For Our Country, post fire weed control works were recently completed along the Sunday Creek.
Christine Glassford, Upper Goulburn Waterways Team Leader said, "The contractors employed by the GB CMA sprayed and stem injected priority weeds, including but not limited to, blackberry, broome and willow along both banks of 18km of stream. This approximately equates to 144ha."
The GB CMA is now planning to commence similar post fire weed control works along the Dry Creek, with works expected to commence on the 15th of February. Landholders adjoining the Dry Creek have been sent notification of the proposed weed control and are asked to contact GB CMA staff in the Yea office on 5736 0100 to discuss any issues with access or works proposed.
Support to undertake woody weed control may also be available through DPI for freehold land. To register your interest for assistance with weed management on private land, call DPI on 5784 0600.
The GB CMA encourages landholders along burnt waterways to fence stock from streams, utilising the available subsidy of $8 per metre or through GB CMA coordinated Work Crews constructing the fence as negotiated. Interested landholders are encouraged to contact the GB CMA to obtain waterway grant assistance or for further information on the grant criteria. Standard grants still apply for landholders along unburnt waterways.
GB CMA assistance with weed control along major waterways and the increased support for fencing is expected to be available for two years, pending 2010/11 Fire Recovery funding.
