Len Lewis reckons Benalla Lake is great for the town. Len, a resident of Benalla for many years, remembers when the lake was nothing but a “a couple of creeks” running through a swamp in town. He remembers playing golf on the course around it, and the many wayward hooks and slices that fed balls into the water.
Today, it’s a different story. Len, who lives almost a kilometre (or “about 870 metres” to be precise) from the lake, believes it was “the best thing they (the council) ever did for the town.” He uses the track around the lake for exercise every morning and evening with his wife, Elizabeth, and their dog, and believes that it’s improved the look and feel of the town.
According to Len, the Lewises and their dog aren’t the only ones using the lake. “It should only take about a quarter of an hour to walk around the lake, but because you see so many friends it takes about an hour” said Len.
Len is happy to add that Benalla residents share the lake with a diverse range of wildlife. He sees koalas, platypus, water rats (Rakali) and plenty of birdlife on a regular basis, but also believes that weeds are taking over the lake.
