How has the river changed?
In the Goulburn Broken Catchment a vast majority of the native vegetation has been historically cleared for agricultural development and timber supply. Today only 30% (715,000 ha) of the pre-European coverage remains, and the Broken River frontage has been of no exception. Clearing of vegetation and resultant erosion, changes in river flows through irrigation, uncontrolled stock access for water access, destructive recreational activities such as four-wheel-driving, weed invasion, salinity etc. have all led to the degradation of the river.
