A selection of indigenous wetland species to the Shepparton Irrigation Region of theGoulburn-Broken Catchment that may be suitable for establishment within locally constructed wetlands (adapted from EMG 1998).  Wetland species suggested for planting, and tailored to individual areas within the Goulburn Broken Catchment, can be found in Part 2 of this guide.

Beware
Many native wetlands plants can look very similar to introduced weeds.  Always use a detailed identification book when collecting wetland plants, consult a specialist, or purchase them directly from a nursery.

Each wetland plants species tend to grow in a preferred depth of water, known as Zones.  Zones vary from areas only infrequently flooded to those wet all year round.  However in general, the following broad zones can be recognised.  Ensure that the species of plant that you intend to establish is located within its required zone (as indicated in the above table).
