The Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority's Drought Employment Program is now in full-swing with crews carrying out work to protect and improve the environment at key sites along the Goulburn River.

Chris Doyle, Chair of the Upper Goulburn Implementation Committee, said "The Drought Employment Program which is part of the Victorian Government's drought response package, is seeing works teams fully operational on sites along the Goulburn River."

"The benefits of the project are two-fold,"  Chris added.

"The program is providing gainful employment to farmers, farm workers and farm service providers affected by the drought and we are able to utilize their skills to deliver river health improvements, which is perfect for our needs as caretaker of the rivers within the catchment.

"We have been impressed by the enthusiasm and skill of the employees whose work will make a lasting contribution to the environment.

"Work so far has included fencing, weeding, rubbish collection and a water savings project."

Current projects in the upper Goulburn catchment include weed control, targeting willows and blackberries on the Goulburn River at Seymour and Alexandra.

The Upper Goulburn Implementation Committee is one of three area-based committees appointed by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority to connect local communities with the peak natural resource management responsibilities of the GBCMA.

The prime function of the Committee is to develop and oversee the implementation of an annual integrated natural resource management program in the upper Goulburn catchment, reflecting the relevant priorities of the Regional Catchment Strategy and those of the wider regional community.
