Regional River Health Strategy

In 2005 the Goulburn Broken Regional River Health Strategy was adopted by the Minister for Water and Environment the Hon John Thwaites. The Strategy aims to combine all elements of river management under one umbrella document.

In particular, the Goulburn Broken Regional River Health Strategy aims to achieve four main objectives:

  1. Protecting the rivers that are of highest community value from any decline incondition;
  2. Maintaining the condition of ecologically healthy rivers (as defined in the VRHS);
  3. Achieving an ‘overall improvement' in the environmental condition of the remainder of rivers;
  4. Preventing damage from future management activities.

The Goulburn Broken Regional River Health Strategy 2005 integrates waterway programs into a multidisciplinary framework and considers water quality, flow, wetlands, instream and riparian flora and fauna, fisheries and recreation. The strategy will enable rivers of high quality to be protected and others to be improved in quality for current and future generations.

It integrates actions from a variety of GB CMA strategies and programs (floodplain and rural drainage; water quality, wetland management; flow management, waterway management and implementation; recreation; fisheries management; instream and riparian flora and fauna) to achieve major riverine resource condition targets outlined in the Goulburn Broken Regional Catchment Strategy 2002.

The Goulburn Broken Regional River Health Strategy:

  • Identifies values associated with our riverine systems.
  • Identifies stresses which impact on environmental, economic and social values.
  • Provides a framework for the development and implementation of issues-based action plans.
  • Develops local riverine health goals and targets.
  • Provides a basis for the development and implementation of multi-benefit works and activity programs.
  • Allows for the identification of gaps in the current management of river health.
