Regional Landcare Facilitator

The Goulburn Broken CMA is proud to host the Regional Landcare Facilitator (RLF) program. This program supports Landcare and production groups to meet the challenges of food security, climate change and the protection of biodiversity by assisting them to adopt sustainable land management practices and to protect the region’s landscapes.

The Regional Landcare Facilitator (RLF) program is an initiative of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry.  This four year program funds Regional Landcare Facilitators located in each of the 56 natural resource management regions across Australia where they support Landcare and production groups.

Facilitators will help Landcare and production groups meet the challenges of food security, climate change and the protection of biodiversity by assisting them to adopt sustainable land management practices and to protect Australia’s landscapes.

Facilitators will work on projects through Landcare networks and are a conduit for farmers and land managers to provide feedback to the Government and the National Landcare Facilitator, Brett de Hayr, on emerging issues and activities in the regions, relevant to Landcare and agriculture.

RLF’s will assist groups by identifying private and public funding opportunities to support project proposals and will work closely with groups seeking funding from Caring for our Country (CFOC) funding program primarily with the Sustainable Practices section. Funding opportunities and information can be found at the bottom of this page.

Carbon Farming Initiative

RLF’s also provide information and assist  groups to provide information to farmers and land managers in their regions on how they can benefit under the Carbon Farming initiative (CFI). RLF’s will undertake this role in conjunction with the Australian Government’s CFOC Sustainable Farm Practice Facilitators and Indigenous Land Management Facilitators. The CFI allows farmers and land managers to earn carbon credits by storing carbon or reducing greenhouse gas emissions on the land. Credits can then be sold to businesses and people wishing to offset their emissions. More information on the Carbon Farming Initiative can be found at http://www.daff.gov.au/climatechange/cfi

The Carbon Farming Initiative Communications Program has allocated funds through the RLF program in the Goulburn Broken region to provide farmers and land managers with information on:

  • the CFI, to enable them to make informed decisions about it
  • how they might be able to participate in the CFI
  • the productivity, economic and environmental benefits from creating land-based carbon credits.

It will see Regional Landcare Facilitators work closely with farmers, Indigenous Australians and other land managers to identify how they can participate in and benefit from the opportunities created by the CFI and carbon farming.
