A further boost for Hollands Creek

Hollands Creek Demonstration Reach will benefit from further funding, from the Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA), to continue works to protect the endangered Macquarie perch and enhance stream health.
Wayne Tennant, Manager Strategic River Health at the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (CMA) explains "The funding, from the Demonstration Reach Initiative will compliment funds already provided to the Goulburn Broken CMA through the Victorian Government's Healthy Waterways Initiative."
"This will be the final allocation of funds to the Hollands Creek, from the MDBA's Native Fish Strategy" said Mr Tennant. "So this is a great opportunity to complete some of the actions already commenced along the Creek.
"It is unfortunate but we understand that funding for the Native Fish Strategy is to discontinue after this year. The local Community Reference Group will be meeting shortly to discuss the funding and to look at opportunities to continue the project into future years" Mr Tennant added.

This funding builds on the success of previous work and actions being undertaken by the community along Hollands Creek over the past three years. It recognises the achievements of the community over the past three years."
The project has seen positive results, with recent fish surveys highlighting improvement in fish numbers.
"The high priority status and major asset of the Hollands Creek Demonstration Reach is the presence of the endangered Macquarie perch (Macquaria australasica). These dark-grey or bluish–grey fish have a rounded tail, large, white eyes, and prominent pores on the snout and are restricted to only a few remaining stream reaches within the catchment.
The program, which has been in place for over three years, has seen a range of work being implemented, including fencing, revegetation, pest plant control, habitat creation, monitoring and community activities.
