Honeysuckle Creek Catchment Research Forum

August 2003

A research forum was held in August 2003 at the Caniambo Hall to present a range of projects being undertaken the Honeysuckle Creek Catchment. A brief outline of the presentations and contact details for the research projects are listed.

  1. Heartlands - An Overview

The Heartlands Project aims to design and achieve socially acceptable land use change in selected focus catchment and to monitor the effectiveness of land use change in alleviating environmental degradation.
    Presenter: Dr Hamish Creswell
    CSIRO Land and Water, Canberra

  2. Honeysuckle Creek - airborne electromagnetic survey calibration results and interpretation.

The Honeysuckle Creek Catchment area was flown to gather information about what is happening under the ground with salt stores and salt movement in the soil profile. The results of this are currently being analysed and converted into a more useable format.
    Presenter: Mr Anthony Christensen
    Department of Primary Industries

    Email: Anthony.Christensen@dpi.vic.gov.au
  3. Heartlands - low rainfall farm forestry

This project aims to develop recommendations for successful establishment and growth of commercial plantations on farms in low to medium rainfall zones (550 - 750 mm). Plantation design options will be developed to achieve maximum productivity as well as environmental benefits through recharge control, biodiversity enhancement and carbon sequestration.

  4. A study of Vertebrate Wildlife in Eucalypt Plantations

This project examines ways of enhancing the biodiversity values (habitat for fauna) in commercial eucalypt plantations.

    Department of Sustainability and Environment
    Phone: (03) 9450 8703
    Email: Richard.Loyn@dse.vic.gov.au
  5. Biophysical Modelling for Biodiversity

This project uses mapping tools to identify priority areas for restoring the landscape from a biodiversity perspective. It takes the best available information from scientific literature and applies it to a map of the Goulburn Broken Catchment.

  6. Biodiversity and Farm Business

This project aims to highlight practical ways to manage native biodiversity while maintaining on-farm cash flow, productivity and other producer goals.
    Contact: Jim Moll
    Department of Sustainability and Environment
    Phone: (03) 5761 1611

  7. Evaluating Ecosystem Service from Sheep Pen Creek

The aim of this case study is to evaluate the impact of changes in vegetation pattern on ecosystem services in the Sheep Pen Creek subcatchment.

  8. Greenhouse Demonstration Project

This project aims to provide integrated information at a regional level on the carbon sequestration potential of various revegetation projects, regional climate change scenarios, the impacts of climate change on natural resource management issues and how to integrate climate change so that multiple benefits can be achieved.
    Contact: Paul Ryan
    Australian Greenhouse Office

  9. Conservation Planning Using Birds

Bird surveys undertaken across remnants in the Longwood and Violet Town areas have provided useful information for conservation planning at a landscape scale.
    Contact: Dr Doug Robinson
    Department of Sustainability and Environment
    Phone: (03) 5761 1676
    Email: Doug.Robinson@dse.vic.gov.au
  10. Biodiversity and Land Use Change

This project explores the relationship between land use change, its impacts on biodiversity and what causes the land use change. Understanding how land use may impact on native biodiversity can help decision making.
