Broken Goulburn Implementation Committee (BGIC)

In 2008-2009 the Mid Goulburn Broken and Upper Goulburn Implementation Committees were amalgamated to form the Broken Goulburn Implementation Committee, the Implementation Committee for the dryland region of the Goulburn Broken Catchment. The dryland region accounts for approximately two thirds of the Goulburn Broken Catchment, the Shepparton Irrigation Region accounts for the other third.

The Broken Goulburn Implementation Committee is a community based committee drawing its ten representatives, appointed by the GB CMA Board, from across the upper catchment and plains of the Goulburn and Broken Rivers. The Implementation Committee has a strong commitment to engaging communities, as communities have a major input into the environmental future of their region.

The Broken Goulburn Implementation Committee is actively involved in decisions regarding the long term sustainability of the Goulburn Broken dryland. It provides strategic advice to the GB CMA Board and Program Managers and oversees the implementation of natural resource management programs delivered by the Authority and its partners, the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Department of Primary Industries.

The members have responsibility for liaison with the communities and local government representatives from Mitchell, Murrindindi, Mansfield, Strathbogie, Benalla and Moira shires.

The Implementation Committee shall exercise its functions which have been specified by the Board and are:
Overview of the Dryland Region, its Environment and People
This area of the Goulburn Broken Catchment is referred to as the ‘dryland’ as dryland agriculture is the dominant farming type, as opposed to irrigated agriculture in the Shepparton Irrigation Region.
Overview challenges in the dryland region
The diversity of natural resources and impact of European settlement on the delicate Australian landscape presents the Broken Goulburn Implementation Committee with considerable challenges.
The Dryland Landscape Strategy
The GB CMA's Dryland Landscape Strategy was published in 2009. It was developed in response to rapid changes that are occurring in the dryland landscape, and that a new natural resource management approach was needed.
Current Projects
Landcare Awards
The Broken Goulburn Implementation Committee has a strong association with Landcare as Landcare plays an integral role in the delivery of many natural resource programs.
Community Education Grants
The Broken Goulburn Implementation Committee Community Education Grants support community education and awareness of environment related catchment issues.
