Barmah Significant Ecological Asset Plan

The Barmah Millewa forest has been named as one of six icon sites earmarked for special attention under the Murray Darling Basin Commission Living Murray initiative. The Barmah Forest Significant Ecological Asset Management Plan was developed in response to the initiative.

The plan recommends flows that will lead to a more natural flood regime and better breeding opportunities for native plants and animals.

The MDBC Ministerial Council last year agreed that 500 gigalitres of water should be returned to the River Murray annually as a first step to improve the health of the degraded waterway.
