Bush Returns

Bush Returns is an incentive program aimed at encouraging large-scale natural regeneration of native vegetation on private land.

Annual stewardship payments are provided to successful landholders to undertake actions (typically grazing exclusion and pest plant & animal control) to improve the extent and condition of native vegetation. The program was trialled by the GBCMA in 2004 / 2005 and is now being delivered by the Department of Primary Industries in the dryland region of the Goulburn Broken Catchment.

A paper on Bush Returns was presented at a national biodiversity conference in Launceston in June 2007. The paper "Testing market-based instruments for conservation in northern Victoria" authored by Carla Miles, can be found as a chapter in the CSIRO publication, "Biodiversity: integrating conservation and production, case studies from Australian Farms, Forests and Fisheries" or request a copy from Carla Miles at carlam@gbcma.vic.gov.au.

The 2008/09 expression of interest period has closed. Future rounds of Bush Returns are expected pending funding.
